Afroattire

A GENERATIONAL STORY OF DRESS MAKERS

Afroattire is driven by the passion of a third-generation of dress-makers to make African inspired clothing as easily accessible as its European counterpart. Yes, you heard right. We said the third generation.

Mazi Igwe was a Nigerian civil war Septagerian who passed on the trade to Kalu Uku (Elder Kalu) who in turn passed the Dress-making touch to his sons – Kalu Nta I and Kalu Nta II. Those who grew up or live in Aba can easily understand how long lengths of generations of cloth designers are a common phenomenon among us the Ogbo-people of Abam-Ohafia.

As you might have been aware, simply bearing the tag ‘Aba-trained Tailor’ is perceived in Nigeria as a mark of excellence in cloth-making craftsmanship. Irrespective of what part of the country a seamstress hails from, you are seen as the hallmark of fashion quality if you were tutored in Aba. This widely held belief is not just a perception but a reality and Ndi Ogbo were responsible for creating and entrenching this uncommon trust that makes made-in-Aba a respected tagline.

The piece of the fish is that quality apparel designing craftsmanship not only runs in our family but also in our wider clan.

That’s not all. The vision behind Afroattire is bigger than it’s root clan and stretches beyond the hustling grits of Aba craftsmanship to Africa and wherever the Great Ocean may have spread the sons and daughters of the beloved Brown Mother.

Africans are known the world over to be proudly flamboyant and uninhibitedly expressive when it comes to their attire. From the black-white stripes of the Tiv to skirt-like wrapper of the Efik-Ibibio; from the Babariga of the Hausa-Fulani to the below-the-arm unique Kente of the Ashanti of Ghana; from the lion garb of the Onyerubi Igbo to the Adi-Ire or Aso-Oke of the Oduduwas; and not to forget the Senegalese Kaftan.
